Social media

How often should a small business post on social media?

The honest answer is: as often as you can keep up with good posts. A steady rhythm you can sustain beats a burst of activity followed by silence.

In short

  • Choose a rhythm you can keep: Pick a number of posts per week you could still manage in your busiest month.
  • Plan in batches: Plan a month of posts in one sitting and schedule them.
  • Review monthly: Look at what got saves, shares and messages, and make more of that.

Consistency beats volume

Followers and platforms both respond to a reliable rhythm. Posting every day for two weeks and then disappearing for a month tells people you are not around. A smaller number of posts, on a schedule you can keep, builds trust over time.

Pick a rhythm you can keep in your busiest month

Think about your busiest time of year, then ask how many good posts you could still manage. That is your baseline. You can always add more in quieter periods, but the baseline should never slip.

For many small businesses that means a few feed posts a week, plus stories on the days something is happening. Stories are lower effort and keep you visible between bigger posts.

Different platforms, different habits

  • Instagram: feed posts and reels for discovery, stories for day-to-day updates.
  • TikTok: rewards frequent, casual video more than polish.
  • LinkedIn: works well for service businesses with fewer, more considered posts.
  • Facebook: still useful for local communities, events and older audiences.

You do not need to be everywhere. Choose the one or two platforms where your customers already are and do those well.

Plan a month at a time

Sit down once a month, map out your posts against what is coming up (launches, seasons, events) and schedule them. Planning in one go means you are not trying to think of something clever at nine at night.

The best content calendar is the one you actually follow.

Measure what matters

Likes are nice, but saves, shares, comments and direct messages tell you more about whether a post is working. Once a month, look at your best performers and make more posts like them.
