In short
- Hook first: Say what the video is about in the first two seconds, on screen and out loud.
- Shoot vertical: Frame for 9:16 from the start rather than cropping a landscape shot later.
- Repeat formats: Three formats you can make every week beat one perfect video a month.
Why short-form works for small businesses
Short vertical video is where people already spend their time on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. The platforms push it to people who do not follow you yet, which makes it one of the few free ways left to reach new customers. It also suits small businesses: a real person explaining what they do comes across better than a polished advert.
Start with three repeatable formats
The hardest part is not filming, it is deciding what to film every week. Pick three formats and rotate them:
- The answer: one customer question, answered in under thirty seconds.
- Behind the scenes: how a job is done, an order is packed or a space is set up.
- The result: a finished piece of work, a before and after, or a happy customer (with their permission).
Formats save you from a blank page. When you sit down to plan, you are filling slots rather than inventing ideas from scratch.
Get the first two seconds right
People decide whether to keep watching almost immediately. Open with the point, not a logo or a greeting. Put a short line of text on screen that says what the video is about, because many people watch with the sound off.
Lead with the thing people came for. The introduction can wait.
Keep the kit simple
A recent phone, a window for light and a cheap clip-on microphone will get you a long way. Sound matters more than picture: viewers forgive a slightly soft image, but not audio they cannot hear. Film vertically from the start so nothing important ends up cropped out.
Batch your filming
Set aside one session to film several videos at once. Change your top or the background between takes so they do not all look the same. Batching turns video from a daily chore into a monthly task, and it is how most businesses keep going past the first few weeks.
When to bring in help
If you have the formats but not the time, or you want a launch film or brand video to sit alongside your everyday clips, that is where a production team earns its keep. A single well-planned shoot day can produce a hero film and a stack of short clips cut from the same footage.
